The Clam Shack’s lobster roll is the lobster roll to which all others are compared and found wanting. If I get to choose my one last meal on this earth, this lobster roll would be it—combined with my mother’s lemon meringue pie, which is the perfect complement to lobster rolls, by the way. It certainly isn’t for lack of trying that I have yet to eat a lobster roll that is superior to the Clam Shack’s. Recently, I have tried a few that came close, and I even wondered if I was just holding some sentimental attachment to the Clam Shack lobster roll. So, every time I find a contender, I stop by the Clam Shack within a day or so, and sure enough, no matter how many times I try it, it is even better than I remember. This lobster roll accomplishes its greatness with a combination of all of the elements. The meat, bread and butter are superior to most every other lobster roll, but when tried individually, I could not say that there is any one component that really makes it. The magic happens when it all combines in your mouth at just the right temperature. I suppose maybe it’s like French food or other fine cuisine—you have to get every element in every bite or you aren’t experiencing it correctly.
